General Pichegru was General-in-Chief of the revolutionary armies, made famous for having fought against the European powers in 1795. Shortly after having covered himself in glory, he was suspected of having relations with the monarchists and then accused of participating in the 1797 coup d'état aimed at overthrowing the Directoire. In 1804, he was finally arrested for having participated in Cadoudal's plot to overthrow the first Consul Bonaparte. He was found dead in his cell in the Temple prison a few weeks later.
