Boli fetish, Bamana, Mali - Lot 28
Boli fetish, Bamana, Mali
wood, organic materials
H.22cmxW.31cm.
One of the most sacred objects in Bamana belief, the boli is a spiritual artifact of considerable power. Designed to receive sacrifices in order to invoke and influence a spiritual force, it is made from a variety of materials, including wood, bark, stones, roots and animal matter. The accumulation of sacrificial materials over time imbues the structure with increasing spiritual power as each layer is added. As an intermediary for communication with ancestors or supernatural powers, the boli is regarded with awe and admiration because of the energetic force it contains.
