Sir Joshua REYNOLDS (Attributed to) - Lot 37
Sir Joshua REYNOLDS (Attributed to)
Plympton (Devon) 1723 - London 1792
Portrait of a man with blue eyes.
He is shown in bust, three-quarter view, wearing a short brown wig, a white shirt, a discreet yellow vest and a blue jacket with a red collar.
Oil on canvas. Formerly oval (Re-stained, missing and scratched)
H. 75 - L. 63 cm.
Wood and gilded stucco frame with foliage and flower motifs.
The pose, density of volume and breadth of execution are reminiscent of the similarly sized (71 x 58.4 cm) portrait of Captain Davies (or Davis) in the former Beresford Barrette collection (Cf.David Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds ; Pl.586, cat. no. 487 (Yale University Press 2000).
Similar, highly characteristic elements can be found in the portraits of Thomas Fitzmaurice in the Trustees of the Bowood Collection (idem no. 629) and Richard Robert Graham from Admiral Sir. A. E Cunningham Graham (idem no. 755).
